Grow is a certified Community Development Financial Institution that works to elevate entrepreneurs. The organization provides small business loans ($50,000 and below) to entrepreneurs in the West Michigan community. We prioritize loans to those who have been left out of traditional capital markets.

Loan Officer

Location: Grand Rapids, MI in a hybrid environment. Full-time, exempt (36.5 hrs/week).

Working Hours: Monday - Thursday: 8:30am – 5:00pm; Friday: 8:30am – 1:00pm 

Summary of the Role:

The Loan Officer is responsible for converting loan applications to successfully funded business loans. This position will work with our intake and business development teams to identify applicants. The loan officer will also work with our underwriter to provide timely feedback, verify documents via our lending portal, track the loan approval process, and finalize the loan through closing. This role will also support the lending team operations by working closely with our Chief Operating Officer.


  • Work with the Lending Team to perform credit analyses and determine repayment probability using risk management matrices
  • Analyze completed application packages, conduct due diligence and financial analysis, and draft credit memoranda as needed
  • Verify that documents in loan files—such as credit reports, loan applications, and financial statements—are complete, current, and accurate
  • Present loan recommendations to the COO and/or CEO as appropriate
  • Prioritize and track the loan underwriting process in order to meet deadlines and ensure timely submission of loan packages for review
  • Provide end-to-end application support from processing to closing, as needed
  • Review all loan applications and disclosures for discrepancies and compliance with regulatory guidelines
  • Represent Lending Team in the community, as needed
  • Provide support for ad-hoc projects from the COO
  • Track and support organizational and departmental goals and outcomes

Experience and Competencies: 

  • 5+ years of work experience in economic or community development, microfinance, small business, social enterprise, and/or small business or related work
  • Strong self-motivation, driven by smart goals and the ability to work independently
  • Demonstrated experience in lending, finance, or credit underwriting
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work well with and listen to Grow’s target market
  • Superior analytical and organizational skills with strong attention to detail
  • Demonstrated experience in customer service, especially in challenging situations, and the ability to simultaneously be clear, firm, and supportive
  • Ability to demonstrate sound judgment and effective decision making
  • Experience with data entry and tracking outputs and outcomes through Customer Relationship Management (CRM) platforms
  • Bilingual competency in Spanish language highly preferred
